Dining out in style – Apex Green

Apex Green

Having decided to redevelop the bustling Al Aali shopping complex in Bahrain, the owner wanted to maximise retail opportunities for its myriad boutique shops and art displays while also providing a cafe haven from which to admire the Mall’s combination of Arabic and contemporary styles. All while keeping its doors open…

The boulevard

Al Aali shopping complex, located in the business district of the Kingdom of Bahrain’s Seef area, is a unique example of contemporary architecture combined with traditional Arabic elements and styles. Opened in 1996, it covers around 52,000m².

Apex Green was offered the chance to design both districts of this newly developed area of a busy commercial complex. The client’s brief specified two areas of interest outside the popular Al Aali Mall, renowned for its boutique shops and annual art exhibition.

Central water feature

The first challenge was to provide a relaxed, leisurely contemporary environment for the restaurant section that would more accurately reflect its name of Al Aali Boulevard. Apex Green added planting areas, a focal water feature and lighting to complement the architectural design of the building, and its graceful combination of contemporary and traditional elements.

The second, north-facing plot (which at this point is still under construction by sister company Apex Plus Contractors) is to be a twist on the first and the design will lead neatly into the shopping area, bringing to the fore the boutique shops, permanent art displays and retail units. This will give shoppers a chance to browse the window displays as well as time to admire the Mall’s design from the comfort of the café area.

The Mall remained open for business throughout the build time, and the design allowed for elements to be moved into place without any disruption to the retail units. This practical approach was also reflected in the locally sourced, hard-wearing materials and supports Apex Green’s aim to create a timeless design, aesthetically and practically.
