Committee meets to discuss eradicating mesquite

The supervising committee of the national campaign to eradicate invasive plant mesquite held its first meeting on Sunday in the presence of H E Dr Fuad bin Jaafar bin Mohammed al Sajwani, minister of Agriculture and Fisheries.

H E Sajwani said that the process of eradicating the plant is a national duty, and everyone should join hands for the campaign because the plant is causing damage to agriculture and the environment.

At the beginning of the campaign, the ministry stated that the plant has been a menace as it threatens local tree species, competing for water and soil nutrients. Its leaves contain toxic substances, and thorns are known to cause serious injuries to humans.

Sunday’s meeting reviewed a report prepared by the ministry on achievements of the project in recent times and the contribution of government agencies involved in it. The meeting also reviewed a proposal to form an executive committee for the campaign and support groups in the targeted governorates.
